Title Still Life with Earthenware Jug and Pipes, Pieter van Anraadt
Library Mauritshuis
Date 1658
Description On the wooden table in this painting the viewer sees a green cloth, a small coal-pan, an earthenware jug, a glass of dark beer, a dish with tobacco wrapped in paper and some clay pipes. This subtle still life is unique in the oeuvre of Pieter van Anraadt, whose other known work consists only of mediocre portraits. Despite Van Anraadt being just a beginner when he painted this still life, he renders the various materials - earthenware jug, glass, metal, wood, fabric, paper - and the light reflecting from them, very expertly. Each surface, whether shiny or dull, displays amazing fidelity to nature. Van Anraadt probably acquired this manner of working, which is the result of close observation and a refined style of painting, from Gerard ter Borch, who knew how to render fabrics like satin and velvet in a true-to-life way.
