Library Mauritshuis
Date 1667
Description In this painting Michiel de Ruyter is portrayed as a hero: he leans on a celestial globe, holds a commander's baton and looks out with a resolute glance. The heavy red curtain is drawn aside, revealing a seascape. Michiel de Ruyter was an admiral who won a glorious victory in the 'Four Days' Battle against England in 1666. To commemorate this victory, this portrait was painted and hung in the quarters of the Admiralty in Amsterdam.

The portrait is by Ferdinand Bol, but the seascape was done by Willem van de Velde the Younger.
