Title | Portrait of Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676), Ferdinand Bol with Willem van de Velde the Younger |
Library | Mauritshuis |
Date | 1667 |
Description | In this painting Michiel de Ruyter is portrayed as a hero: he leans on a celestial globe, holds a commander's baton and looks out with a resolute glance. The heavy red curtain is drawn aside, revealing a seascape. Michiel de Ruyter was an admiral who won a glorious victory in the 'Four Days' Battle against England in 1666. To commemorate this victory, this portrait was painted and hung in the quarters of the Admiralty in Amsterdam. |
