The heavy red curtain is drawn aside, revealing a seascape. Michiel de Ruyter was an admiral who won a glorious victory in the 'Four Days' Battle against England in 1666. To commemorate this victory, this portrait was painted and hung in the quarters of the Admiralty in Amsterdam. |
