Additional Information Cornelius Cuyler (1697-1765) was a third generation emigrant from Holland to New York State where he became a fur trader, a Mayor of Albany (1742-1746) and supplier to the troops in the French and Indian War. These four volumes of letterbooks were kept by Cuyler from 24 October 1724 to 3 March 1736/7 and 30 July 1752 to 5 December 1764. The letters were written from Albany, N.Y. and deal primarily with his mercantile interests. Some of them are in Dutch. Principal correspondents in the earlier volumes are Richard Jeneway, Samuel Baker, John Cruger and Messrs. Storke and Gainsborough. The later volumes include correspondence with his sons, Philip, Henry, Cornelius and Abraham, and his son-in-law, Isaac Low, all of whom seem to have been associated with him in his foreign and domestic trading interests. There is also correspondence with Messrs. Henry and John Cruger, Messrs. Storke and Champion, William Baker, Joseph Mico, Richard Wibird and John Ledyard. There are some references to the French & Indian War and occasional notations of supplies sent to the military forces.
