The disconnect between the place of cultivation (or the source of raw materials) and the place of production is one of the more remarkable features in the evolution of global trade. When we also factor in the place of consumption we begin to gain an understanding of the nature of globalisation and global trade. To take the example of chocolate, the finished chocolate bar might bring together cocoa grown in Ghana, sugar grown in the West Indies and powdered milk from India – all ending up in a factory in Switzerland whose products end up in Britain, Australia and America. Given the distances involved, transportation has always been critical.
