Additional Information | Daniel G. Helm was born on 22 July 1815 in Wurtsboro, Sullivan County, New York. He was a book agent, farm labourer, itinerant peddler, teacher, and land owner. This collection contains two diaries and eleven letters that span the period from 29 December 1840 to 20 June 1854. The diaries detail his fascinating travels around the Mid-Atlantic States as a book agent and teacher. They also include details of the types of items bought and sold (pins, cap lace, needles, combs, buttons, German silver teas, fine gold jewellery such as finger rings, earrings, breast pins, fine cap border laces and Mantilla trimmings. The letters, some of which coincide with his diary entries, were sent to relatives from home. |
