Title Posthumous portrait of Mary I Stuart (1631- 1660) with a servant, Adriaen Hanneman
Library Mauritshuis
Date c.1664
Description In this painting Mary I Stuart is seen in a magnificent satin gown over which she wears a South American cloak of coloured feathers. Mary's headdress is decorated with pearls and ostrich feathers. Such costumes were worn by ladies at court to masquerades, or costume balls. Mary Stuart is dressed here as an Indian princess. Feathered cloaks of this kind had been brought from Brazil as early as 1644 by Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen. The artist Hanneman heightened the exotic aura of the painting by adding the black page, himself splendidly decked out with a gleaming pearl in his ear.
