Art and Literature

Timothy Brook’s Vermeer’s Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World (2007) has been widely adopted by scholars teaching global commodity history. Brook makes great use of seventeenth-century Dutch painting to show how these images reveal increasing engagement between Europe, China and the wider world. High-quality reproductions of a number of paintings from the National Gallery, London, the National Gallery, Washington DC, the Stadel Museum, Frankfurt, and the Mauritshuis Museum, Den Haag are included in this project − in the section Global Commodities in Art − and can be projected in the classroom or used for project work. The selection of artworks in Global Commodities offers artists’ views of the everyday use, availability and transportation of key commodities. Global Commodities in Art provides pictorial analyses of some of these artworks and suggests alternative methods for studying commodities.
